Herbert David Joyner of Monroe, died on Monday, February 26, 2018 after a long bout with heart failure. He was born April 8, 1935 in Franklin County, NC of the late Zollie T. Joyner and the late Annie E. Joyner. Herb came from a large family of nine. He was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters. Surviving is one sister, Ruth White of Spartanburg, SC, and one brother Bob Joyner of Gastonia, NC. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, March 10, 2018 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 116 South Church St. Monroe, NC 28112. For 25 years Herb was the owner of Carostate Industries, an ice and oil business. The business was expanded from the original site in Monroe and covered a large area of North Carolina before it was sold in 1993. He was a veteran of the US Army and spent most of his service career in Germany. He received an associate degree from Louisburg Junior College and his Bachelor of Arts from Wake Forest University. He was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Monroe, NC and served over the years as Senior Warden, Junior Warden, and finance chairman. He also was a charter member of Loaves and Fishes of Union County, and was instrumental in starting the organization in 1993. He was very active in the community. He served on the Union Memorial Hospital Board. He was a Paul Harris member of the Monroe Rotary Club, and served as its president and other positions in his over 35 year membership. He also served for many years with the United Way of Central Carolinas. From 1993 until 2005 Herb served on the Union County Advisory Board of Directors of Branch Banking and Trust. He enjoyed volunteering as a counselor with the SCORE Association which is a resource partner with the US Small Business Administration. In 2017 he was honored as a counselor emeritus for that organization. He was well known and well liked in the community. He will be missed by friends and family. Herb is survived by his wife of 58 years, Barbara H. Joyner. Other survivors are his sons, David Joyner and his wife Christine Joyner of Raleigh, NC, and Benjamin Joyner of Charlotte, NC. Also surviving are his three grandchildren Jake, Tess, and Sam Joyner of Raleigh, NC.
