Hoover Ross

March 11, 1929 — July 1, 2017

Herbert H. “Hoover” Ross of Marshville, NC, passed from this earthly life into God’s hands Saturday, July 1, 2017, at home with his beloved wife and daughters. He had spent the past week holding forth with his many visitors at CMC – Union, and back at home on the farm where he had spent his life working to provide for his family, his church and his community. Hoover leaves behind his wife of 65 years, Sarah Griffin Ross, daughters, Sharon Ross (David) Johnson and Brenda Ross (Mike) Peters, and granddaughter, Celena (Jake) Johnson Davis, all of Marshville; sister Sara (Joe Frank) Thomas of Peachland, and brother Fred (Beth) Ross of Indian Trail; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and countless others who loved and “adopted” him these 88 years. Hoover was born in Burnsville, NC, March 11, 1929, to Charlie P. Ross and Adeline “Miss Addie” Caudle Ross. He was 12th of their 15 children. Brothers and sisters who predeceased Hoover were: Charles Ross, Hazel Lee, Louise Caudle, Virginia Younts, Keith Ross, Graham Ross, Malene Beachum, Margaret McNair, Irvin Ross, Wendell Ross, Joe Ross and Doris Hinson. A lifelong farmer at heart and in life, Hoover served in the United States Army and was instrumental in the foundation of Marshville Volunteer Fire Rescue Department. Hoover and Sarah joined Marshville UMC soon after returning from service in Oklahoma Texas. A true Southern gentleman, Hoover will be sorely missed. Hoover will lie in state at Gordon Funeral Service until his Celebration of Life, 2:00 PM, July 6, 2017, Marshville United Methodist Church, 310 Ross St., Marshville, NC 28103, committal will follow at Marshville City Cemetery. The family will visit with friends at the home this week and after the committal service in the Fellowship Hall. Memorials may be made to MUMC’s Maintenance Fund, PO Box 427, Marshville, NC 28103 or Hospice of Union/Anson County, 700 W Roosevelt Blvd, Monroe, NC 28110. The family is grateful for the care and compassion of our church and community, Hospice and CMC-Union, especially Randolph, Juanita Lynn, Kristi, and Dr. John Vick.
