Ida Sylvia Baker

Sylvia Buck Baker, 90, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 25, 2024. She was born in Craven County, NC on August 21, 1933, to the late Jessie Wilfred and Mary Florence Buck. She is preceded in death by her husband, Carol Rudyard Baker, her bother Kenneth Ray Buck, sister-in-law Sue Buck, brother-in-law Earl Baker, and brother-in-law Clarence “Pete” Powell.

Sylvia graduated from Rex Nursing Hospital with an RN degree. She continued nursing for 40 years in every unit in hospitals, as a nurse in a private doctor’s office, and as a nurse in an OB-GYN in a private office. Sylvia was active in the ministries of First Baptist Church Monroe, especially with WMU. She loved her church family , and if the doors were open there'd she be. She loved her family and always strived to take careful care of them from Carol to the youngest grandchild.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on June 1st at First Baptist Church of Monroe, 109 W Morrow Ave. Monroe, NC 28112. The family will receive friends and family prior to the service from 1:00 PM to 1:50 PM in the Family Worship Center. Burial will follow the service at Lakeland Memorial Park.

Sylvia is survived by her three daughters: Linda Smith (Blair), Jessica Baker, and Beverly Miller (Rod); her sister, Esther Powell, six grandchildren; James Baker (Loryn), Jeremy Baker (Elizabeth), Aaron Smith (Gabby), Andrew Smith (Esme), McLain Miller, and Avery Miller; sister-in-law Betty Baker, and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to either First Baptist Church, 109 W Morrow Ave. Monroe NC 28112 or Concord Place Activity Fund, 1501 Zion Church Rd. E Concord, NC 28025.
