James “Jim” A. Griffin, 80, passed away on Thursday, August 27, 2026. He was born in Monroe, NC on February 20, 1946, son to the late Alfred A. Griffin and Elizabeth Outen Griffin.
Jim grew up in Badin, NC, graduating from North Stanly High School in 1964 and NC State University with a BS in Textile Technology in 1968. He moved to Gastonia, NC where he was the Quality Control Manager for a Firestone Manufacturing Company.
He then went on to serve his country in the Army from 1969 to 1972. During his service, he received several decorations including the Bronze Star, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and Campaign Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal.
Following his time in the Army, Jim returned to his job with Firestone, but in their Bowling Green, KY. Plant. He was then employed at General Motor’s Corvette Plant in Bowling Green in quality control. In 1988, General Motors transferred him to their Tech Center in Warren, MI., as a Design Engineer in interiors and color. He retired in 2008 and moved back to Monroe in 2010.
Jim was a faithful member of First Baptist Church in Monroe, having served on several committees and boards, including two terms as chairman of the Board of Trustees.
Jim’s friends and colleagues often referred to him as a kind, generous, hard-working and fun-loving man. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, reading, and watching sports, but most of all, just spending time with his buddies, friends and family.
Jim is survived by his son, David Shoultz (Logan), of Elizabethtown, KY., step grandson, Christian Blick (Sarah) of Russellville, KY., and sister Kathy Cole, of Monroe, NC.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at 2:00 PM at First Baptist Church of Monroe, 109 W. Morrow Ave. Monroe, NC 28112, officiated by Dr. Chris Dawson. The family will receive friends following the service in the Family Life Center.
