James “Jim” Randolph Campbell died July 8, 2025, at Novant Hospital in Matthews, NC. He was born September 14, 1945, to Lizzie McDonald Campbell and James Edward Campbell of Martinsville VA, where he grew up.
Jim entered the Marine Corps at 17 with his parents' signature, because he always said his draft number was first on the list anyway. He was proud of his experience in the Corps both nationally and during the Vietnam War. He taught history and technology for a number of years before he left to become a truck driver.
He was a tinkerer in his home shop, a gardener, a repairman, an avid chess player and a conversationalist. He loved to entertain and be entertained by friends. He was always open to a good debate with his quirky sense of humor and challenged listeners to keep up with his jokes.
Jim is survived by his wife of 51 years. Julia Campbell and a precious son, Jason Campbell (Logan) and three beloved grandchildren, Emma, Thomas, and William. He is also survived by his sister, Jean Moore and numerous nieces and nephews.
Jim will be greatly missed.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to the SPCA of Martinsville-Henry County, 132 Joseph Martin Hwy, Martinsville, VA 24112.
