James Luke Hause, 83, passed away on Saturday, June 17, 2017. He was born in Richmond County, June 23, 1933 son to the late Frank and Mayme Hayes Hause. He is also preceded in death by his son Stephen Hause. Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at Gordon Funeral Chapel, 1904 Lancaster Ave. Monroe, NC 28112. The family will receive friends following the service; Burial will follow at Waxhaw City Cemetery. Luke earned a BS in Electrical Engineering in 1957 from the University of South Carolina. From 1959-1964 he worked with the space program, spending part of that time in Cape Canaveral, Florida. In the early 60's he assisted in the launch of the monkey, the first man in space, and the first man in orbit around the earth. One of his most exciting experiences was launching the Minuteman missile from a silo that went through a smoke ring as it rose to 300 feet. Luke was employed for 27 years at South Carolina's Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC), serving as State Director for Shellfish and Recreational Waters. In 1984 he received a Masters Degree in Marine Science. Luke retired in 1994, and maintained his own consulting business for many years. Luke is survived by his wife, Edith Collins Hause, a daughter, Felicia (Bryan) Friesen of Waxhaw, and four grandchildren, Anna Huber, Claire Friesen, Joel Friesen, and Will Friesen.
