James Donald Helms

Mr. James Donald Helms, 84, Monroe, NC went home to be with his lord and savior on Sunday, January 5, 2020 at his home surrounded by his family. James was born on May 19, 1935 in Union County to the late Joe Lee and Myrtle Helms. He is also preceded in death by his oldest sister Doris Hinson. He was a faithful and longtime member of Lakeview Baptist Church which he considered his family in faith. He enjoyed the fellowship with the Golden Years Senior Group and his Abraham Men’s Sunday School Class. He served his country with the United States Army starting in 1958, after which he came to marry his beloved wife Phyllis and establish his family in Mint Hill for 12 years. His love for Union County took him back to Monroe after retiring as a machinist from Charlotte Machine Company in 1998. James is survived by his wife of 59 years, Phyllis Pressley Helms of Charlotte; son James Douglas (Tina) Helms of Monroe and daughter Angela Helms (Billy) Funderud of Matthews, brother Johnny Paul (Bernice) Helms and sisters; Juanita (Harry) Godfrey, Carolyn Fowler, Helen Barnhardt and Sarah Swink. He had a special love for all his grandchildren; Jackie (Ryan) Berry, Dillon (Kayla) Helms, Dalton (Paige) Helms, Allison Funderud and Anna Funderud, and his great-grandchild Nolan Michael Berry. Funeral services will be held 3:00pm Saturday, January 11, 2020 at Lakeview Baptist Church,4602 Concord Hwy, Monroe, NC 28110. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:00pm until 2:45pm in the church sanctuary. The family would like to extend a special thanks to his nurse Lindsey VanHoose for all her support and compassionate care of our husband, father, & grandfather and to the Hospice team for all their care.
