James “Jim” Wheeler, age 76, of Monroe, NC passed away on Wednesday, January 11, 2023 after an extended illness. He was born in Lawrence County (Louisa), KY on April 29, 1946, son of the late Jess and Joy Wheeler. He is preceded in death by Baby Wheeler (1972). He leaves behind his wife of 53 years, Susan and two daughters, Jennifer Chao (Albert) of Indian Trail, NC and Julie Thomas (Bryan) of Lexington, KY, three grandchildren Hunter (Julie) Andrew (Jennifer) and Isabella (Julie). He is also survived by one brother, Dannie Wheeler (Debbie), two sisters Susie Boyer (Bob) and Diane Smith, cousin Joyce Sutton and many other cousins, nieces and nephews.
Jim was a member and deacon of New Carlisle Freewill Baptist Church. He was a custom cabinet maker and an avid bluegrass & gospel musician by which he touched the lives of many. He played the mandolin and guitar and sang lead and tenor with The Searching Lights group. He enjoyed traveling to many churches performing throughout Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana.
He most enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. His hobbies were woodworking, watching football, basketball, baseball, golf and NASCAR. He will be greatly missed by all his family and friends.
The celebration of Jim’s life will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, January 16, 2023 at Gordon Funeral Service 1904 Lancaster Avenue Monroe, NC 28112 with burial to follow at Lakeland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM to 1:45 PM before the service at the funeral home.
