James Marshall Jones

James Marshall “Jim” Jones, 89, of Monroe, passed away peacefully with his children and his wife of 56 years by his side on Thursday, October 6, 2016 and is now in the presence of the Lord. He was born September 7, 1927, in Anson County, NC to the late James Thomas and Floy Williams Jones. Mr. Jones was a 1944 graduate of Marshville High School, where he was named Salutatorian. Upon graduating high school he enrolled at UNC- Chapel Hill. Following his freshman year he enlisted in the US Navy and served our country proudly. He returned to Chapel Hill and obtained a Bachelor of Science in Accounting in 1950. Mr. Jones then joined Motors Insurance Corporation, a division of General Motors, as an Insurance Adjuster. He retired from MIC after 37 faithful years of service. Mr. Jones was a longtime member and former deacon of Lawyer Springs Primitive Baptist Church and attended Lee Park Church in recent years. He was an avid golfer and a 46 year member of Pine Lake Country Club where he served as a board member. For over 30 years, Mr. Jones was a supporter and volunteer for the Mecklenburg County and Union County Literacy Councils, where he tutored and mentored numerous children. Mr. Jones was often referred to as a “Southern Gentleman”. He was a kind, gentle, and humble man who loved spending time with his family more than anything. One of his passions was watching his children swim competitively for Johnston Memorial YMCA and Mecklenburg Aquatic Club. During this time he devoted numerous hours and served as president of Spearhead Swim Association, the booster club for JMY. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Martha Ruth Burnett. Surviving are his wife, Dianne Sutton Jones; son, Woody Jones and wife, Cindy, of Weaverville, and children, Matthew Jones and wife, Maxelise, of Nashville, TN, and Robert Jones and wife, Erin, of Charlotte; son, Scott Jones and wife, Vicki, of Charlotte, and children Savannah and Daniel Jones; son, Greg Jones and wife, Karen, of Fallston, MD, and children, Sarah and Paul Jones; brother, Edwin Clark Jones and wife, Frances, of Marshville; many nephews and nieces and dear lifelong friends, the Wilson family and the Hardison family. A celebration of life for Mr. Jones will be held on Wednesday, October 12, 2016, at 11:00 AM at Lee Park Church, 2505 Morgan Mill Road, Monroe, NC 28110. A reception and time of remembrance will follow the service, at the church. The family would like to say a special thank you to the many caregivers who cared for Mr. Jones in the recent past including the staff at the Adult Day Program at New Testament Baptist Church, Pruitt Health Center, Novant Health Matthews Medical Center and their Hospice care team. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Adult Day Program at New Testament Baptist Church, 2603 Goldmine Road, Monroe, NC 28110, or Lee Park Building Fund, 200 Tomberlin Street, Monroe, NC 28112.
