James Roebuck Ludlow

August 8, 1953 — January 20, 2024

James (Jim) Roebuck Ludlow was born August 8, 1953, in Danville, IL, and passed away at home on January 20, 2024, surrounded by family and friends. He married the love of his life, Barbara Lois Hoagland Ludlow, on July 28, 1973. He is preceded in death by his parents, Marvin and Robbye Ludlow, his sister Judy Clemons, and two infant grandsons, Tommy and Silas.


Jim grew up in the small town of Covington, IN, and graduated from Covington High School in 1971. He loved the game of basketball and still holds several records at CHS, including the most free throws (15) in a game, and the most free throws (113) and rebounds (394) in a single season. Following high school, Jim received a full basketball scholarship to the University of Denver, where he graduated in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education. He earned his Master of Religious Education in 1999 from Andersonville Baptist Seminary.


Jim worked in the insurance industry for over 42 years and retired on January 1, 2022. He began coaching high school sports in the early 1980s, and his coaching career spanned five decades. He coached boys’ basketball at Cape Fear Academy and United Faith Christian Academy, Upwards Basketball at Mineral Springs UMC, football and girls’ basketball at Parkwood High School, girls’ basketball at Nation Ford High School, Catawba Ridge High School, and Rock Hill High School and women’s basketball at Mars Hill University. In 2022, Jim was an assistant coach at Rock Hill High School when they won the South Carolina High School League 5A Girls Basketball Championship.


In retirement, Jim worked as a substitute teacher at Rock Hill, Catawba Ridge, and Parkwood High Schools.


Jim was an active member at Lee Park Church where he was a greeter at the Chapel Service. He loved the Lord Jesus and is now in His loving arms.


He is survived by his wife Barbara, seven children; David Ludlow (Jennifer), Jaimie Sweem (David), Bekah Ludlow Hart (Blake), Sarah McGimsey (Matthew), Jonathan Ludlow (Carrie), Joey Ludlow, and Hannah Ludlow, as well as eighteen grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, his sister Marlene Ludlow and his brother Bill Ludlow (Jan), seven nieces and nephews and his black lab Misty Mae Ludlow.


A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, January 27, 2024, at Lee Park Church, 2491 Morgan Mill Rd., Monroe, NC 28110. The family will receive friends and family from 10:00 AM to 12:45 PM prior to the service. A graveside service will be held following the service at Lakeland Memorial Park, 1901 Lancaster Ave. Monroe, NC 28112.
