James Morris Rains

James Morris Rains, passed away peacefully in his home on Tuesday, February 2, 2016, surrounded by the love and support of his family. Known as Jim, Pop and Jaybird, he was born in 1926 as the second of nine children to Walter Bruce and Odessa Godwin Rains in Princeton, NC. He served his country in the Navy SeaBee’s and worked for the Railroad for 39 years. Jim’s wife of 61 years, Evelyn Ormond Rains, passed away in 2010. Jim is survived by two daughters, Janet McRorie and Pamela Rains, both of Monroe, son, Phil Rains and his wife, Leigh Price Rains, also of Monroe. Pop was also blessed with six grandchildren and six great grandchildren, Jamey McRorie and his wife, Jillian Wilson McRorie of Valley Head, AL and their three children Samuel (3), Evelyn (2) and John (5 months); Brandon Rains and his wife, April Baird Rains, of Indian Trail, NC and their two children Braden (2) and Adelyn (3 Months); Tyler Rains and his wife Megan Drozda Rains of Belmont, NC and their daughter Rosie (5 Months); Chelsey and Connor Rains, both of Monroe. He was predeceased by his wife Evelyn, his granddaughter Kailey, three brothers, Lester Duran Rains, Walter Bruce Rains Jr, Boyce Rains and five sisters Mary Evelyn Edwards, Katherine Macabe, Jean Denning, Joyce Knight and Judy Pate. The family will receive visitors Thursday evening from 6:00pm until 8:00pm at Gordon Funeral Service, 1904 Lancaster Ave., Monroe, NC 28112. Funeral services will be held Friday, February 5, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Central United Methodist Church in Monroe. A graveside service will immediately follow at Lakeland Memorial Park. Flowers are welcome, however, in lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorials made to Kailey’s Kids serving families of children with cancer.
