James Ervin Stack

September 29, 1928 — March 20, 2025

James “Jim” Ervin Stack peacefully passed away listening to his mentor’s music in the presence of loved ones on March 20, 2025, age 96. Jim was born on September 29, 1928, in Monroe, NC. He was preceded in death by his parents Amos & Mary Marshall Stack, his nephew Patrick Dillon, his sister Mary “Sis” Dillon, and his best friend Tom Dillon. Jim is survived by his niece Mary Marshall Dillon Winn, his great nephew Charlie (Erica), his great niece Jordan McKenzie (Matt), his great-great nephew Marshall, his great-great niece Sutton James and two more double greats on the way.

Jim packed a lot of living in his 96 years! He graduated from Monroe High School and graduated from Queens University with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics. As a rocket scientist, Jim actually worked on the landing modules for the Apollo moon rockets! Jim served in the Air Force & played the piano & vibes in a jazz band for the Officer’s Club that he nicknamed the Crew Chiefs. However, music was always Jim’s first love, and he spent his final decades working 7 nights a week, even into his 90’s. He played the piano at the Charlotte Country Club 5 nights and also in the jazz band at the Cajun Queen on his nights “off”. Jim has left behind quite a legacy of music, and he would definitely want me to let you know he’s got 6 albums on Spotify! He even regularly played the piano during dinner at his last home, Waltonwood.

Jim’s family has been so touched and appreciative of the many Facebook tributes and the comments. His circle of friends was so much larger than we ever knew. The overwhelming sentiment has been about how kind and compassionate he’d always been with everyone in addition to his incredible musical talent. We will be honoring his final wishes not to have a funeral service but know his legacy will continue to thrive through his music and the many lives he impacted.

In lieu of flowers, donations to VIA Health Partners (Charlotte Hospice), Queen’s University or your favorite charity would be greatly appreciated.
