Jamie Newton Jenkins, 78, of Monroe, NC passed away on Thursday, November 27, 2025. She was born in High Point, NC on December 4, 1946, daughter to the late Jesse Radford Newton Jr. and Connie Jones Newton. She is also preceded in death by her two brothers, Jimmy Newton, Jerry Newton, and sister Debi Cathey.
Jamie was unwavering in her faith and was committed to the pursuit of truth and love. She knew that her strength came from her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Jamie and Bill shared this faith. It was this faith, and the devotion of her husband Bill that gave her the strength to endure the many challenges to her health that she faced. Never once did she blame God, but instead, chose to worship and praise. Jamie lived many years with epilepsy and chronic pain, meeting every challenge with courage, cheerfulness, and a sweet disposition that never seemed to waiver. Her resilience was quiet but extraordinary, and it shaped the way her family understood strength and God’s grace.
Jamie drew deep strength from one of her favorite scriptures, Isaiah 30:15 — “In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength…” In a world often rushing and restless, she lived out that quiet trust with a grace that steadied everyone around her.
A gifted educator, Jamie served as a substitute teacher at Parkwood Middle and High Schools and touched countless lives during her time in the school system. Children felt safe with her; teachers admired her; and her kindness lingered long after the final bell. Jamie cared deeply about the teachers and staff, and she always made sure that they knew how important their work was, and how much they were appreciated. In addition to substituting, Jamie also spent a lot of time volunteering at both schools. From (literally) scraping gum from the bottom of desks, to updating the teacher’s lounge, Jamie’s heart was one of pure service.
Jamie’s heart was also for those that had no voice, especially those of children. She never stood silent but frequently spoke out about the injustice she saw around her. This made her loved by those that she helped and encouraged, and feared by those that hid in the shadows.
Family was her heart’s delight. In the 1990s, she sparked cherished birthday traditions — playful gag gifts, crazy hats, and gatherings full of laughter and good food. Jamie was an exceptional homemaker and cook, famous for her biscuits, her heavenly “Angel” eggs, and her signature lemonade tea. Her kitchen was a place where love was served generously and everything was homemade.
A celebration of life service will be held at 5:00PM on Monday, December 1, 2025, in the chapel of Gordon Funeral Service. The family will receive friends following the service, Gordon Funeral Service, 1904 Lancaster Ave., Monroe, NC 28112. Jamie will be laid to rest privately at Lakeland Memorial Park.
Jamie is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, William “Bill” Thomas Jenkins, three sons, Anson Jenkins (Melissa), Evan Jenkins (Rebecca), Chris Jenkins (Brandi), a daughter, Debbie Long (Jeff), and nine grandchildren.
