Mrs. Jane Bullock Furr, 89, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 1, 2022, with her three children by her side. Her life was marked by quiet and enduring devotion to her family, students, and God. A loving wife, Mother, Grandmother, and GiGi, she will be greatly missed but cherished in our memories.
She and her identical twin sister Jean were born in Albemarle, Stanly County, NC to Don Crayton and Nellie Elizabeth Odom Bullock. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of sixty years, Clegg Milton Furr; infant son, Paul Cyrus Furr; beloved twin sister, Jean Bullock Kluttz; and older sister, Novaleen Bullock Robinson.
Mrs. Furr graduated cum laude from Appalachian State Teachers College, Boone, NC with a Bachelor of Science degree in English literature and Physical Education. She taught English and American literature in the Union County Schools (Fairview, Prospect, Walter Bickett, Sun Valley, and Parkwood) for 30 years. She was active in the First Presbyterian Church of Monroe as a Sunday School teacher, member of the Women’s Circle, knitting ministry, and Loaves and Fishes. She enjoyed Scrabble, crossword puzzles, tennis, working in the yard, ceramics, and reading.
Mrs. Furr is survived by her son, Clegg Donald “Don” Furr and wife Kathy of Hoover, Alabama; daughters Jane Elizabeth “Beth” Furr of Durham, NC, and Alice Furr Carnes and husband Glenn of Lancaster, SC; grandchildren Dr. Nicole Schreiner and husband Ryan of Vestavia Hills, Alabama; Dylan Furr and fiancée Alyssa Farr of Hoover, Alabama; Meredith Johnson and husband Nick of Lancaster, SC; Lauren Carnes of Monroe, NC; great-grandchildren Grayson Schreiner (3) and Cade Schreiner (2); Jolene Johnson (5) and Emery Johnson (3).
Funeral services will be Saturday, February 5, 2022, at 11:00am in Gordon Funeral Chapel, with burial to follow in Lakeland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10:00am until 10:45am at Gordon Funeral Service and Crematory, 1904 Lancaster Avenue, Monroe, NC 28112.
