Mrs. Janice Rae Sykes Mastin, daughter of the late Roy Edgar Sykes and Moncie Ratliff Sykes, was born on September 28, 1935 in Pike County, Kentucky. She quietly departed this life with her loving husband, William E. Mastin, by her side on Friday, September 29, 2017 at Novant Medical Center in Matthews, North Carolina. A memorial service will be held at 3:30 pm on October 10, 2017 at Gordon Funeral Chapel, 1904 Lancaster Ave. Monroe, NC 28112. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2:00 pm until 3:15 pm. She was united in holy matrimony to William E. Mastin on June 25, 1961 in Ewing, Kentucky. Janice was an active member at Lakeview Baptist in Monroe, NC and served as the Sunday School Secretary for several years. She enjoyed playing Bingo, participating in special trips, events, and spending time with her church family. The family would like her friends to remember that family and friends were most important to her. She enjoyed trips to her hometown for family reunions, cookouts surrounded by grandchildren and great grandchildren, and especially Thanksgiving. She loved her early years of bowling at Coliseum Lanes with the Coffee Break League, where she was a proud member of the Tar Heel team. She was an avid Duke Blue Devil fan and looked forward to filling out the NCAA tournament bracket and cheering them on. Janice was a wonderful cook and loved to can fresh produce from her garden. It was a true labor of love. If you ever got a chance to play her in a round of Canasta, Uno, Poker, or Rummy Royal, you would see she was as competitive as they come. We plan to continue these traditions for many years to come and reminisce about all the great times we had with her. Her beautiful life will forever be cherished in the lives of her son Charles Ray Bowling and daughter-in-law Elizabeth Bowling of Kannapolis, NC; granddaughter Ginger Bowling Salmon and husband Richard of Charlotte, NC; grandson Jason Walker Gay and wife Michele of Concord NC; granddaughter Melanie Katherine Anderko and husband Keith of Rockhill, SC. She was blessed with eight great grandchildren: Avery Grace Salmon, Parker Alexis Salmon, Jason Walker Gay, Jr., Kayleigh Ann Gay, Joseph Walker Yakabowskas, Elijah Darrel Anderko, Tristan Edward Anderko, and Lukas Charles Anderko. Two brothers survive her: Roy David Sykes and wife Inez; and Billy Andrew Sykes and wife Mary, both of Pike County, Kentucky; and sister Mary Donna (Susie) Brooks and husband Bob of Lenoir City, TN. Janice was predeceased by siblings: Loretta Sykes Ratliff, Margorie Sykes Little, Joe Thomas (Tommy) Sykes, and Harold Dean Sykes. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her honor to Hospice Care. Checks may be sent to Novant Health Hospice, 324 N. McDowell St., Charlotte NC 28204.
