Janice Mccormick Plyler

July 26, 1937 — October 10, 2024

Janice McCormick Plyler, age 87, passed away on October 10, 2024, after a lengthy struggle with dementia. Born in Florence, SC, on a tobacco farm near Mars Bluff. She was the daughter of the late Ernest Pratt McCormick and Pearl Mims McCormick. She attended schools in Florence, SC.

A service celebrating the life of Mrs. Plyler will be held at Siler Presbyterian Church on Saturday, October 26, 2024, at 1:00 PM. The family will greet friends and share memories after the service in the fellowship hall. A private burial will take place at the Siler Cemetery prior to the service.

Janice wore “many hats” in her lifetime. Professionally, she served as an executive secretary for The Charlotte Observer, the regional office of the Morton Salt Company, and the Charlotte office of Independent Life Insurance Company.

In the Wesley Chapel community, she was an active PTA leader/volunteer for her sons’ schools over the years, spearheading many fundraisers such as directing several “Womanless Weddings” and fall festivals, as well as several Sun Valley horse shows to raise money for the uniforms and instruments of the marching band at Sun Valley High School in the 1970s. She cared very much about the community and sought to reach out to those in need over many years through church ministries and local organizations.

She was an accomplished equestrian. She loved her Tennessee Walking horses, exhibiting all over the southeast for several decades, receiving many awards locally and nationally. She and her husband were involved with the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders Association.

Additionally, she along with her husband Evan managed Walking Acres, the Plyler family’s farm for many years.

She loved music and served as choir director/organist/pianist/handbell director at Siler Presbyterian Church for many years. She taught piano students in her home for 30 years as she wanted to encourage a love of music for children of all ages.

In her later years when she was retired, she faithfully managed the care of her aging parents in Florence, SC until their deaths.

Janice enjoyed helping Evan organize reunions in different cities across the United States for his fellow sailors who had served during the Korean War on the USS Tingey.

She was a wonderful and enthusiastic wife and mother. Her family and friends will always cherish the memories of her of her southern cooking.

Janice is survived by her husband of 63 ½ years, Minor Evan Plyler, Sr. of the home. She is survived by Edward Plyler (Roben) of Newland, NC, Minor Evan Plyler, Jr. and partner Pami Webber of Weddington, NC, and daughter-in-law, Cheryl H. Plyler (Larke Plyler, d. ) of Weddington and a brother, Ernest P. McCormick, Jr. (Missy) of Florence, SC. Additionally, Janice is survived by her grandchildren Meredith P. Jiang (David) and David L. Plyler, Jr (Bethany) of Weddington, NC, and Elizabeth P. Oden (Billy) of Richmond, VA, and Giles E. Plyler (Anna) of Atlanta GA. Great-grandchildren include Daniel and Claire Jiang, Waylon, Wyatt, and Wesley Plyler of Weddington, William and Claire McKinnon Oden of Richmond, and Kay Plyler’s children, Hunter and Taylor Yeaton.

She is preceded in death by her son, David Larke Plyler, and her daughter-in-law, Kay Plyler.

The family would like to express sincere appreciation to her dedicated caregivers over the last 7 years: Roxanne, Zsuzsanna, Michele, Megan, Peggy, Thelma, and Kathy, as well as Robin Mundie and the staff of Avendelle Assisted Living in Wingate, NC. The family thanks Via Health Partners Hospice staff for their care and assistance.
