Dateline: Monroe, NC Janie Mae Robinson Starnes, 95, passed away August 17, 2012 at the Jesse Helms Nursing Center. Born in Union County on December 24, 1916, Janie was the only child of William Erwin and Eunice Wilson Robinson. She was married to Kermit D. Starnes, who predeceased her. A graduate of East Carolina University, Janie began teaching at Jackson High School in 1940 and continued teaching in Union County Schools for twenty-two years. She then taught Home Economics at Monroe High School for sixteen years before retiring in 1979. Recognized for her dedication to teaching, Janie was invited to join Alpha Delta Kappa, an educator’s sorority. She was a lifetime devoted member of Central United Methodist Church. While Janie and Kermit had no children of their own, they took great joy in the children at Central and their extended family. A service of witness to the resurrection will be Sunday, August 19, 2012 at 3:00 PM in the Chapel of Central United Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. Britt Hadley and Rev. Gayle Ford. Burial will follow in Lakeland Memorial Park. The family will greet friends at Gordon Funeral Service, 1904 Lancaster Avenue, Monroe, NC 28112 on Saturday, August 18, 2012 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. Janie is survived by sisters-in-law Wilma Starnes of Van Wyck, SC and Beulah S. Friberg of Broadview Heights, OH; brother-in-law Keith Starnes of Van Wyck, SC; and a loving extended family.
