Jeanette Rose (Plyler) Helms

Jeanette Plyler Helms, 86, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 28, 2018, at Sharon Towers Retirement Community, Charlotte, NC, where she was a resident for the past nine years. She previously resided in Monroe, NC. The only daughter of the late Robert Avery Plyler, Sr. and Rose Penegar Plyler, she was born August 15, 1931 in Union County. Jeanette attended Wesley Chapel School and was a graduate of Queens College, now Queens University, Charlotte, NC. She taught school for several years until she married her late husband, Dr. Paul James Helms, who predeceased her on January 25, 2010. She was the owner/manager of The Smart Shoppe, a fashionable ladies’ apparel store, in Monroe, NC, for many years until her retirement. During their marriage, she and her husband visited every country in the world and her hobbies were gardening and needlepoint. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Monroe, NC. A celebration of life service for Jeanette Helms will be held 2:00PM, Thursday, February 1, 2018, at First Baptist Church, Monroe, NC. A reception will immediately follow the service in the Family Life Center at the church. A private family graveside service will be held at Lakeland Memorial Park, Monroe, NC. Survivors include two (2) brothers: Minor Evan Plyler, Sr. and wife Janice of Matthews, NC and Douglas M. Plyler, Sr. and wife Vicki of Wesley Chapel, NC. Five (5) nephews: Dr. Edward T. Plyler and wife Roben of Morganton, NC, David Larke Plyler and wife Cheryl of Matthews, NC, Minor Evan Plyler, Jr. of Matthews, NC, Douglas M. Plyler, Jr. and wife Michele of Florence, SC and Charlton Avery Plyler and wife Amy of Monroe, NC. Six (6) nieces: Laurie Plyler Maultsby and husband Steve of Belmont, NC, Amy Plyler Stefanou and husband Nick of Hendersonville, NC, Emily Plyler of Atlanta, GA, Rose Plyler Daigle and husband Steve of Charlotte, NC, Beth Plyler Elkins and husband Charlie of Rock Hill, SC, and Katie Plyler Cochran and husband Bo of Charlotte, NC. Nine (9) great-nephews and Six (6) great-nieces, and Special Friends, Dr. Brantley Aycock, Sr. and wife Sue of Mint Hill, NC. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by two brothers, Lynn Wells Plyler of Rock Hill, SC, and Robert Avery (Bob) Plyler, Jr. of Charlotte, NC.
