Mrs. Jewell Thomas Starnes, 77, of Monroe, NC passed away on Thursday, July 2, 2020, at the McWhorter Hospice House surrounded by her family. She was born in Union County on July 16, 1942 to the late Mark Thomas and Ida Howard Thomas. She was also preceded in death by her son James R. Starnes, sister, Doris T. Aderholt, and brothers Hoyle Thomas, Earl Thomas and Bryce Thomas. Jewell was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She cherished her friend Mrs. Mary Stegall, as well as, her school friends, and her church family. She was a godly woman and walked and lived out a Proverbs 31 life. She will be greatly missed by all that knew her. A graveside service will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, July 5, 2020 at Prospect United Methodist Church Cemetery, 6020 Prospect Road, Monroe, NC 28112. During these times of limiting the numbers for social gatherings, the Starnes Family respects your concerns of avoiding crowds, so they welcome you to stop by Gordon Funeral Service, 1904 Lancaster Ave. Monroe NC 28112, earlier in the day on Sunday, July 5, 2020 from 10:00 AM until 1:00 PM to pay your respects to avoid crowds. Jewell is survived by her loving husband of 62 years James L. Starnes, daughter Beverly Phillips (Douglas Phillips), her son Chris Starnes, daughter-in-law Angie Stogner Starnes, and brother Sam Thomas, all of Monroe, NC. She leaves two granddaughters, Stephanie Starnes Hunneycutt (Jesse Hunneycutt), Savannah Costner and four grandsons: Brandon Makely-Phillips (Ryan Makely-Phillips) of Atlanta, GA, Matthew Blake Starnes (Brandy Eason Starnes), Eric Phillips and Dylan Stogner of Monroe, NC. She was blessed with four great grandchildren.
