Joan V. Griffin

October 16, 1933 — November 1, 2024

Joan V. Griffin, age 91, passed away on November 1, 2024, in Matthews, North Carolina. Born on October 16, 1933, Joan lived a life marked by her deep faith, spirited personality, and dedication to her family, friends, and neighbors.

A service to celebrate Joan's life will be held at Hickory Grove Baptist Church, 7200 East W.T. Harris Boulevard, Charlotte, North Carolina, at 4 p.m. Thursday, November 14th. Joan's life was a profound example of love, faith, and community, and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Joan graduated from Central High School in Charlotte, NC, and worked many years as a secretary at the textile company D.E. Williams, where she was known, as she was everywhere, for her friendliness and her commitment to serving others. Enthusiastic and outgoing, she never knew a stranger.

Joan was an active member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir and enjoyed fellowship with other Christians. Her faith was an integral part of her life, and she shared her love of the Lord with everyone around her. She contributed generously to her church, to missions, and to other charities that tugged at her heart, and she dearly loved reading the Bible.

Joan’s hobbies included gardening, canning and preserving, travel, and woodworking. She was a voracious reader, with an excellent command of grammar that she shared freely. She loved to cook and bake, and was famous for her fudge, peanut brittle, and coconut cake, along with numerous kinds of pound cake. She was thrifty to her core and reveled in a good bargain.

She is survived by her children, Richard Lloyd Griffin (wife Maureen Ryan Griffin), Jan Louise Sweeney (husband Matthew Sweeney), Joan Gayle Griffin, and Jamie R. Groover; her cherished grandchildren Matthew Griffin, Brynn Logan, Amanda Kirkman, Daniel Griffin, Casey Tobias, Lucas Tobias, Tabitha Champ, Mark Champ, and Jonathan Groover; her beloved great-grandchildren Lily Griffin, Yvonne Gonzalez, El Assante Logan, Sierra Marsh, Rhys Kirkman, Harry Kirkman, Ellie Kirkman, Taylor Tobias, Emma Tobias, Reid Tobias, Micah Tobias, Kaia Tobias, and Autumn Groover; and great-great-grandson Amor King Lofton; as well as numerous members of her extended family. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William Lloyd Griffin; her son, William Ronald Griffin; and her twin sister, Janet Vogel Jones.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hickory Grove Baptist Church in Charlotte, North Carolina; Youth 71Five Ministries in Medford, Oregon; or the ASPCA.
