John Alexander Jr. Davis

May 8, 1932 — July 14, 2016

John Alexander Davis, Jr., 84, of Charlotte, passed away Thursday, July 14, 2016. He was born in Waxhaw, NC, on May 8, 1932, to the late John A. Davis, Sr., and Mary Patton Davis. Mr. Davis had a lifelong passion for meteorology and astronomy and would often challenge the weather predictions of the local meteorologists and was right most of the time! John was very active in sports and excelled in basketball. He was an avid Tar Heel basketball and Carolina Panthers fan. Mr. Davis had a love of birds and the outdoors. As a young boy, he was a Waxhaw Boy Scout. Later in life, John enjoyed the many road trips he and Iris would take to Seagrove and Asheville in search of the perfect piece of pottery to admire or give as a gift. He enjoyed many family vacations over the years in the NC mountains, NC SC beaches, Savannah, GA, and Florida. He also looked forward to the annual fall family vacation in Asheville. He leaves behind his loving wife, who cared for him through sickness and in health, Iris Cochrell Davis, with whom he recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary; six children, Ginger Davis (Carey), Judy Davis, Marie Davis (Steve), Joan Osborn (Anthony), Susan Chapman (Steve), and Stephen Davis; two grandchildren, Hannah McGhee and Kyla Horn; and four great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind a sister, Betty Davis Ledford, as well as many nieces, nephews, wonderful friends and neighbors; and his sweet 16 year old Maine Coon cat who used to follow him around as he did yard work. He was predeceased by his only grandson, Joshua Chapman. We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dad's CNAs who provided care for him in the most gentle, caring, and professional manner. A celebration of life will be held on Monday, July 18, 2016, at 10:30 AM in the Gordon Funeral Chapel, 1904 Lancaster Avenue, Monroe, NC 28112, with interment following at Waxhaw City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Humane Society of Charlotte, 2700 Toomey Avenue, Charlotte, NC 28203, or Eastern Hills Baptist Church, 4855 Albemarle Road, Charlotte, NC 28215.
