Dateline: Monroe, NC Rev. John Wayne Baker went to be with the Lord on Thursday, February 14, 2008 at the age of 71, surrounded by his loving family. Rev. Baker was born in Union County, NC on February 24, 1936 to the late John and Ollie Baker. He served the community for forty years. He ministered first at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church and most recently at Solid Rock Baptist Church in Monroe. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and he will be missed by all the people whose lives he touched. We know that he is fishing and walking in Heaven. He was preceded in death by three brothers, James Baker, Billy Joe Baker and Wade Baker and a special nephew, Johnny Baker. He is survived by his loving wife, Peggy of fifty-four years; three sons, Mike Baker and wife Judy of Washington state; Rick Baker and wife Julie of Monroe; and Aaron Baker and wife Julie of Marshville; two daughters, Sue Medlin and husband Wade of Marshville; and Debbie Arant and husband David of Marshville; two brothers, Sam Baker and Cecil Baker; and a sister, Faye Tarlton; eleven grandchildren, Michelle O’Leary and husband Kevin, Crystal Baker, Jimmy Baker and wife Nikki, April Fraker, Shelby Baker, Hunter Baker, David Arant and wife Lindsey, Jeffery Arant and wife Tamara, Terry Smith and husband Ben; Erica Baker and Ashley Baker; three great-grandchildren, Kerstin Henry, Dylan O’Leary, Nathan Arant and another Baker boy on the way. Visitation will be held Saturday evening, February 16, 2008 from 6:00 until 8:00 at Gordon Funeral Service, 1904 Lancaster Avenue, Monroe, NC 28111. Funeral services will be held Sunday, February 17, 2008 at 2:00 at Solid Rock Baptist Church. Rev. Joe Marze and Rev. Roger Nance will be officiating. Graveside service will be held at Lakeland Memorial Park immediately following the funeral.
