John M. Johnson

January 24, 1929 — October 30, 2019

John M. Johnson, 90, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 30, 2019 at Atrium Main Hospital in Charlotte. He was born in Siler City, NC to the late Ulysses and Annie Laura Bray Johnson. He graduated from Siler City High School. John served in the Army during the Korean conflict as a Medic. He was employed for many years a machinist for Singer Machine Company and retired from L.A. Simpson Machine Company of Monroe. John was also a Master Mason of Lodge no. 244 and a Shriner. In his younger years, John was an enthusiastic fisherman and rabbit hunter. He was an avid bowler where he traveled the circuit and won many trophies. In his later years he loved spending time at home working in his garden, planting trees in his yard, watching ballgames or just sitting under a shade tree with his beagle “Buford”. John is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Betty Knight Johnson, daughter Kenda McCoy (Richard) and two grandchildren, Kendrick McCoy and Kensley McCoy; a brother Clyde Johnson (Treva) of Dobson, NC; a sister Mary Frances Davis (late Calvin Davis) of Siler City, NC; two nieces and one nephew. The family will receive friends from 1:30pm-3:00pm Sunday, November 3, 2019 at Gordon Funeral Service, 1904 Lancaster Ave. Monroe, NC 28112, followed by a service to celebrate his life at 3:00pm in Gordon Funeral Chapel. Interment will be immediately afterwards at Lakeland Memorial Park.
