John Charlie Loyd, 96, of Monroe, passed away Friday, November 4, 2016. He was born December 22, 1919 in Union County, NC, son of the late Charlie Robert and Fannie Plyler Loyd. Mr. Loyd was a faithful member of Wolf Pond Baptist Church, where he enjoyed serving. A veteran of the U.S. Army, Mr. Loyd served from November 7, 1941 until May 13, 1945. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and gardening, but most of all, spending time with his family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lennie Elnora Rollins Loyd, son-in-law, Jack Helms, sister, Annie Mae Loyd, and brother, Thomas Haskell Loyd. He is survived by four daughters, Betty Helms, Brenda Bass (John Jr.), Johnnie Funderburk (Dennis), and Wanda Laton (Richard) all of Monroe; sisters-in-law, Virginia Knight and Jo Rollins; grandchildren, Tommy Helms (Tammy), Tony Helms, Kevin Funderburk (Stephanie), Kristi Goins (Brett), Liliya Shevchenko (Eric Sutherland), Charles Laton (Kelly), Patrick Laton (Samantha); great-grandchildren, Jamil, Donald, Katie, Elijah, Colton, Caleb, Emma, Owen, Olivia, Robert, Jonathan, and Hunter; and great-great grandchildren, Aiden, Ethan, and Jaxton. The family will visit with friends and relatives from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Saturday evening, November 5, 2016, at Gordon Funeral Service, 1904 Lancaster Avenue, Monroe, NC 28112. The funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, November 6, 2016, at Wolf Pond Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Military Rites.
