John Richard Maier

March 6, 1926 — June 5, 2018

John R Maier,92, of Monroe, NC, passed peacefully into the light at his home on June 5, 2018, surrounded by his children and caregivers. He was born on March 6, 1926, in Nutley, NJ, and grew up in nearby Clifton, NJ. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943 and served in Europe aboard a supply ship supporting the troops at Omaha Beach on D-Day. He was very proud of his military service. He married Ruth Anne Claudepierre in December 1946, after discharge from the Navy. The couple and their children, John and Barbara, lived briefly in Elizabeth, NJ, before settling permanently in Totowa, NJ, in 1952. His first wife Ruth Anne passed in 1990, but he remarried in 1996. He and his second wife, Doris (Larko), lived in Monroe until her passing in 2014. John had a 38-year career at Bell Telephone Co. of New Jersey. His real love was woodworking and building. He made countless pieces of furniture for family members, and did any number of building projects for independent and commercial customers in NJ and NC. He was also very involved in square dancing clubs in NJ, and was a lifelong member of the VFW. J A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00AM Saturday, June 9, 2018 in the Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 725 Deese Street Monroe, NC 28112, entombment with military honors will follow in Lakeland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Friday, June 8, 2018 from 7:00PM to 8:30PM at Gordon Funeral Service 1904 Lancaster Ave. Monroe, NC 28112. John is survived by his son John Maier (m. Ceil Parteleno) of Andover, MA, and daughter Barbara Maier (m. Libby Baker) of Pageland, SC, two grandchildren, Evan Ozimek-Maier (m. Alyssa) of Swampscott, MA, and Molly Ozimek-Maier of Clifton, VA, two great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. The family wishes to express our heartfelt gratitude to his end-of-life caregivers Mike Evans, Larissa Moore, and LeAnne Cook for their devotion and loving care.
