John Roy Plyler, 79, passed away peacefully on Friday May 29, 2015, at Novant Hospital, Matthews, N.C. Born on March 25, 1936, in Union County, North Carolina, Roy was the son of the late Daniel Charlton Plyler and Grace Price Plyler. In addition to his wife of over sixty years and best friend, Joyce Secrest Plyler, he is survived by a daughter Anne and her husband Steve Carlton and a son Danny and wife Melody of Wesley Chapel, N.C. The moments with his two grandchildren Elizabeth Anne Carlton and Wyatt Plyler were always the greatest pleasures in his life. He leaves to these two special grandchildren a legacy of love and special “Paw Paw”memories. Survivors also include sister, Sarah Preslar of Lancaster,S.C. and a brother, Butch Plyler (Becky) of Wesley Chapel. He was preceded in death by a sister, Emily Anne, and a brother William Charlton Plyler. A graduate of Wesley Chapel High School in 1953, Roy was an outstanding catcher on the baseball team and an active member of the school’s basketball team. He served as the president of the Wesley Chapel Future Farmers of America and received local, state, and national honors in the FFA. A continued supporter of agriculture, Roy was an active board member of the Farm Bureau. He opened each monthly meeting with a prayerful invocation for the support of all farm programs and those responsible for the continuation of agriculture. An active school, church, and community leader and servant, Roy was a pack leader in Boy Scouts, president of the Sun Valley Boosters Club, PTA member and school advisory councils and a deacon and elder at Siler Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Monroe Jaycees and a number of other civic and community organizations. An avid Carolina Tar Heel fan, Roy seldom missed his beloved Tar Heels playing either in Chapel Hill or in his favorite chair at home. For over forty years, Roy and Joyce owned and operated Plyler Heating and Air Conditioning. After his retirement, he and Joyce enjoyed traveling and spending time with family. Roy was a long time member of Siler Presbyterian Church where the service will be held to celebrate his life at 3:00 PM, Tuesday, June 2, 2015. Visitation will follow the service in the Siler Fellowship Building. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Siler Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 6301 Weddington-Monroe Rd, Wesley Chapel NC 282104.
