Johnny Braxton Helms

Johnny Braxton Helms, 81, passed away on Sunday, March 19, 2023. He was born November 6, 1941 in Union County, son to the late Homer Braxton Helms and Madge Preslar Helms. He is also preceded in death by his son Gary Michael Helms of Wingate, NC, brother Clinton Helms of Locust, NC, sisters Vera Simpson Godwin (Van) of Wingate, NC, and Betty Mills (Max) of Marshville, NC.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday, March 26, 2023 at Austin Grove Baptist Church 5919 Austin Grove Church Rd, Marshville, NC 28103. The family will receive friends following the service in the sanctuary of Austin Grove Baptist Church.

Johnny attended Wingate High School, where he played basketball all 4 years and was known by his classmate as Cotton Top, due to his blondish-white hair. He was a member of the last graduating class of Wingate High School, which would then become Forest Hills.

He was a member of Austin Grove Baptist Church, a member of the Wingate Lion’s Club, and the proud owner of Helms Cleaners in Wingate. He loved antiques and the various pet dogs that he had owned over the years.

Johnny is survived by his son Randy Helms (Kelly) of Charlotte, NC, brother Donald R. Helms (Margaret) of Marshville, NC, three grandchildren Raven Foley (Jay), Jennifer Hammill (Matt), Kaitlyn Helms, and two great-grandchildren Grayson Hammill, and Peyton Hammill.
