Johnny Oran Pigg

May 24, 1936 — April 16, 2018

Johnny Oran Pigg, 81, passed away April 16, 2018. He was born May 24, 1936 in Monroe, NC son of the late Oran A. R. Pigg and Annie Helms Pigg. Mr. Pigg is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Margaret Flowers Pigg; son Johnny Scott Pigg, wife Anna Buford Pigg; granddaughters Emily Pigg and Sarah Pigg; sister Elizabeth Pigg Walters, husband William H Walters; and four nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by daughter Lauren W Pigg. Johnny studied Agricultural Education at North Carolina State University and subsequently worked at farm supply stores in Charlotte, Albemarle NC, Orangeburg SC and Marshville NC. Johnny was later hired at Allvac during the early days of the company. There, Johnny was introduced to the relatively new industry of high-temperature alloys designed for the aerospace industry. Johnny was always grateful to the Nesbit family for giving him this opportunity and he remained at Allvac until his retirement. After retiring, Johnny continued to assist Allvac on special projects for a number of years. Throughout his life Johnny was involved in the community with organizations such as the Jaycees, the Civitans, the Rotary Club, and HASOBS. He was a long-time member of Marshville United Methodist Church and served there faithfully in a number of capacities. He was instrumental in the creation of the Marshville Museum and Cultural Center and was honored as the 2012 Union County Man of the Year. After retirement his hobby became working his family farm south of Monroe. Tending the cows, planting, cutting and hauling hay was his way of relaxing, in the company of Randy, Rex and Jr., his beloved cattle farmer friends. He had an appreciation for travel and has seen the world from Alaska to Asia both in business and after retirement. But perhaps his greatest joy was spending time with his two granddaughters. He loved taking Emily and Sarah to places they had never seen, showing them the sights and telling them how things were when he was young. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, April 19th, 2018 at the Marshville United Methodist Church with the burial to follow at the Marshville City Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday April 19th at 10:00 AM at the Marshville United Methodist Church.
