Johnsie Collins Hernig slipped away peacefully on Tuesday, January 8, 2019 while a patient at Hospice of Union County in Monroe, NC. Born in Union County on October 21, 1926, Johnsie was the only child of the late John Walter and Martha Clyde McGuirt Collins of Waxhaw.
Services to celebrate the life of Johnsie Hernig will be 2:00pm, Friday, January 11, 2019 at Central United Methodist Church in Monroe, NC, with the Reverends Britt Hadley and Gayle Ford officiating. Interment will follow at Monroe City Cemetery. The family will greet friends prior to the service from 1:00pm until 2:00pm in Central Hall.
Johnsie graduated from Waxhaw High School and East Carolina University. She then began a 28-year career in education teaching for Monroe City Schools. Additionally, Johnsie supported her children’s activities, played bridge, knitted, read, planned beach trips, and supported the pottery business established by her husband, Jack
The Hernigs married in 1952, the beginning of a 59 year marriage. They spent their years rearing their family, building their careers, and serving their community and church. Johnsie joined Central United Methodist Church where she taught children’s Sunday school, was president of the UMW, was a member of adult Sunday school, and was active in the Quatrefoil and the Leslie Anne Circles. After Johnsie and Jack moved from Monroe to her childhood farm in Waxhaw, Johnsie renewed friendships from her childhood, joined the Waxhaw Woman’s Club, renewed her interest in flowers and farm animals. Here, they continued to welcome others and especially their growing family who will remember her love and devotion to Jack, her unconditional love for her family, and her special love for Jan, Ken, and her extended family.
Johnsie is survived by children, Jack (Jock) L. Hernig III (Jan), of Chelsea, Al.; Mark Collins Hernig of Waxhaw; Martha Hernig Whitaker (Ken) of Waxhaw. Also surviving are grandchildren, Lindsie Hernig Guerrasio (Vinny) of Auburn, Al.; Jakob L. Hernig IV (Deidra) of Chelsea;
and Lena of Chelsea; Leigh Ellen McLaughlin, Jennie McLaughlin, Corrine McLaughlin, all of Waxhaw; great grandchildren, John David (J.D.) and Joseph Guerrasio of Chelsea, Al.; nephews, Horace B. Clark of Hudson and Jimmy Williams of Monroe; a niece, Elsie Clark Mitchell (Pete) of Myrtle Beach.
In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be sent to Central United Methodist Church, 801 S. Hayne Street, Monroe or Pleasant Grove Camp Ground, P. O. Box 6, Mineral Springs, NC 28108.
