Joseph “Joe” Lynn Black
1954 – July 11, 2025
Joseph Lynn Black, cherished husband, devoted father, and respected pharmacist, passed away
peacefully in the early morning of July 11, 2025, at the age of 70. Born in 1954 and raised in Union County, North Carolina, Joe grew up with a spirit of curiosity and adventure. A proud graduate of Piedmont High School in 1973, he went on to earn a Bachelor of Science and Pharmacy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1978. That same year, he married the love of his life, Cathy, beginning a lifelong partnership built on love, faith, and mutual respect.
Joe enjoyed a remarkable 50-years in pharmacy, where he became known for his
professionalism, expertise, and deep commitment to patient care. Yet, it was his ability to
connect with others that truly set him apart. He never met a stranger and made it his mission to
make everyone feel like family. His colleagues and patients alike cherished his kind heart and
steady presence. Joe was known as “Dr. Joe” and the community’s scrap metal collector, title’s
he wore proudly as he used his efforts to raise money for missions—specifically to provide
Bibles for villages in Malawi.
Joe's life was rich with passions. He and Cathy were avid travelers who loved exploring new
places, trying out new restaurants, and chasing waterfalls. His love for adventure was matched
only by his love for collecting—most notably Lionel trains and antiques, which he carefully
curated over the years. His home reflected his interests, filled with the treasures he found and
cherished.
Above all, Joe loved Jesus and his family. Joe and Cathy raised three sons—Michael, Chris, and
Stephen—instilling in them the importance of faith, kindness, and generosity. He was a loving
and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, always seeking to make memories with his family,
whether it was through spontaneous adventures or quiet moments.
Joe is survived by his loving wife, Cathy; sons Michael (Amanda), Chris (Morgan), and Stephen
(Mallory); grandchildren Carson (20), Emilee (18), Caden (17), Mason (14), Summer (13), and
Caroline (12), sister Jane Long (Dennis), father and mother in law Bill and Becky Smith, and a wide circle of family, friends, and colleagues who will miss his gentle spirit and servant’s heart.
He is preceded in death by his baby boy, mother Hazel Black, father Joe G. Black, and sister Dean Hinson.
A memorial service celebrating Joe’s life will be held 2:00 PM, Saturday, July 19, 2025 at Unionville Baptist Church, 510 Baucom Road, Monroe, NC 28110, with burial to follow Benton’s Cross Roads Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends and family prior to the service from 12:00 noon until 1:45 PM in the church sanctuary.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to ACTS Missions/Jesus Saves (memorial for Joe Black) actsmissionsnc.org , in honor of Joe’s lifelong dedication to his love for Jesus and his passion for helping others.
