Joyce Marie Walter

Joyce Sherrill Walter, age 95, beloved wife to Luther Eugene Walter for 73 years, was welcomed into Heaven on Wednesday, July 16th, 2025. Born on February 19th, 1930, she was the daughter of the late H.E. and Ellen Sherrill.

Joyce and her late husband, Gene have been residents for most of their lives in Wingate, NC and were members of First Presbyterian Church in Monroe. Joyce held a Masters degree in Elementary Education with a specialty in Reading, and was a former 2nd grade teacher at Benton Heights Elementary School in Monroe. She taught for over 30 years before she retired. She was loved by her fellow teachers and most of all by her students, or “her kids”, as she used to call them.

Joyce is survived by her son Steve Walter and wife Jimmie of Waxhaw, NC; daughter Terry Walter McRee and husband Brad of Hilton Head Island, SC; sisters Elsie Harkins of Canton, NC and Sue Waters of Concord, NC. She is also survived by her grandson Cayse Logan McRee and wife Jackie of Hickory, NC.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Joyce at 2:00PM on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at First Presbyterian Church, 302 E. Windsor St., in Monroe, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are requested in support of Hospice of Union County, 700 W. Roosevelt Blvd, Monroe, NC 28110 or First Presbyterian Church, 302 E. Windsor St., Monroe, NC 28112.
