Julian Mann Bell of Monroe, NC passed away on April 10, 2021 at the age of 99. Born October 21, 1921 in Elberton, GA, Julian was son of the late George Newton Bell and Mary Mann Bell. He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife of 74 years, Jo Hammond Bell, brother George Lee Bell and his wife, Margery of Abbeville, SC, brother Francis Jack Bell and his wife, Martha of Elberton, GA, and granddaughter Haley Parham Donley of Marietta, GA. He graduated from Elberton High School and went to work for Seaboard Railroad. In 1942 he was drafted and served 39 months in the Army Air Corps. In 1945 he was honorably discharged and returned to Elberton to work with Seaboard Coastline Railroad and in 1950 was promoted to Chief Clerk and Cashier. Julian was promoted at Seaboard to Station Agent in Clinton, SC in 1955 and to Station Agent in Monroe, NC in 1958. He retired from Seaboard Coastline Railroad (CSX) in 1981 after 40 years. A lifelong Methodist, he was a member of Central United Methodist Church and a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class, where he taught for several years. In service to the Church, he served as President of the Methodist Men and on the Sanctuary Building Committee. Julian was an avid knitter having learned from a Pink Lady volunteer during a hospital stay. After losing his sight to Macular Degeneration in 1983, he continued knitting, making over 100 afghans, most of which were donated and gifted to friends, family and newborns in the Church. He is survived by a daughter, Aileen Ray (Steve), of North Myrtle Beach, SC, sons Charles Bell (Beth) of Charlotte, NC, Roger Bell (Debi) of Clemmons, NC, Scott Bell (Beth) of Nashville, TN and Mark Bell (Linda) of Monroe, NC, 10 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. A private family memorial service will be held on Monday, April 19, 2021 at Central United Methodist Church Prayer Garden with inurnment in the church Columbarium.
