Obituary

It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Julian Gordon Shannon, who departed this life on Thursday, March 19, 2026, at the age of 83. He was affectionately known as Gordon, Gordy and PawPaw and leaves behind a legacy of family, faith and love.

A celebration of life service will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, March 27, 2026 in the chapel of Gordon Funeral Service, with burial to follow at Lakeland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 26, 2026, from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Gordon Funeral Service, 1904 Lancaster Avenue, Monroe, NC 28112.

Born on February 11, 1943, in Monroe, North Carolina, Gordon was the son of the late William Sidney Shannon and Lucille Gordon Shannon. He was also preceded in death by his beloved siblings: Mildred Lowery (Tom), Bruce Shannon (Mary), Dorothy Fowler (Henry), Mary Shannon Crisp (Bob), and Martha Shannon Broome (Buddy).

Gordon leaves behind a loving family who will cherish his memory always. He is survived by his devoted wife, Bobbi Trull Shannon; his daughter, Miriam Shannon Plyler; his grandsons, Alan Plyler Jr., Will Plyler (Sydney), and Brad Plyler; his precious great-granddaughters, Kinsley and Sophia; his stepdaughter, Amy Burris (Robert); along with many dearly loved nieces, nephews, and a wide circle of friends.

Gordon attended Kings College in Charlotte and began his career with ten years in banking at the Federal Reserve. He later pursued his entrepreneurial calling by opening his own residential painting company. Known throughout Union County and surrounding areas for his professionalism and exceptional quality, Gordon proudly served families across three generations. He believed strongly in hard work and doing every job the right way, often saying, “Gotta do the prep work, right.” A true perfectionist, he took great pride in his craft, ensuring that every detail met his high standards—an approach that carried over into his personal life as well.

He was known among family and friends as a sharp dresser, always presenting himself with care and style. Gordon had a deep love for Carolina Shag dancing which led to the founding of Monroe Shag Club in 1987. He could often be found on a dance floor, whether locally or traveling with friends. He also had a lifelong passion for automobiles and motorcycles, especially vintage models, always keeping an eye out for classic cars that caught his interest.

Above all, Gordon was a devoted and proud family man. He deeply loved and never missed an opportunity to express how proud he was of his family. His kind and generous heart, willingness to help others, and the ability to offer thoughtful advice, made him a source of strength and comfort to many. A man of strong faith, Gordon cherished his church family and attended faithfully until his health no longer allowed.

Though he may have departed from this world, Gordon’s legacy of love and kindness will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him. We are grateful for the time we shared and the countless ways Gordon enriched our lives. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew him.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorials be made to Lee Park Church, 2491 Morgan Mill Rd, Monroe, NC 28110 or Austin Grove Baptist Church, 5919 Austin Grove Church Rd, Marshville, NC 28103.
