Karen Mary (Schmidt) Meyer

Karen Schmidt Meyer of Monroe, N.C., passed away on March 15, 2016 at the age of 74. Karen was born in Chicago, IL in 1941, and grew up in Wilmette, IL. Karen graduated in 1959 from Wayland Academy in Beaver Dam, WI, and attended Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. She was a 50 year member of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority. Karen married Frank Meyer in 1962 beginning their family in Northbrook, IL. Frank’s career led their family to Delray Beach, FL in 1968 where she was able to play tennis and volunteer as a Pink Lady at the local hospital. Karen and her family moved again in the early 70’s to Charlotte, NC where she began her career as a corporate travel agent. She coordinated travel for several large companies in the Carolinas including BMW. Karen and Frank took advantage and travelled the world. Karen never met a stranger and could always strike up a conversation wherever she went. She will truly be missed. Karen was a loving mother and other hobbies included cooking and being with her Golden Retrievers. Honey, her beloved Golden Retriever, has been her constant companion through the last several years. Karen and Frank were known for their love of the breed, and worked with the Golden Retriever Rescue Club over the years. Together they loved and nurtured 14 Golden Retrievers through their fifty years of marriage. She was preceded in death by her husband of almost 50 years, Frank M. Meyer and her parents, Mary E. and Willis H. Schmidt. She is survived by her children, Bill Meyer, of Charlotte, Laura Davidson and her husband, Terry, of Monroe and John Meyer and his wife, Donna of Stallings and by her wonderful grandchildren, Casey and Carson Meyer, and Sarah and Mark Davidson. Karen also leaves her two sisters, Susan Hick of Salem, Oregon, and Elizabeth Schmidt of Delray Beach, Florida and two nephews, Graham and Carter Hick. A memorial service will be held Monday, March 21 at 1:00 PM in Gordon Funeral Chapel, 1904 Lancaster Avenue, Monroe, NC 28112. The family will have visit with friends and relatives following the memorial service.
