Kenneth Earl “Ken” Thomas, 76, passed away Wednesday, August 2, 2017. He was born December 7, 1940 in Union County, NC son to the late William Earl Ruth Lemmond Thomas. He is also preceded in death by a step daughter Karen Haney Elms. A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM, Saturday, August 5, 2017 at First Baptist Church of Monroe, with inurnment to follow in the church columbarium. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10:00 AM until 10:45 in the church parlor. Ken is survived by his loving wife Nancy Hinson Thomas, step son, Dean Haney, wife Beverly, son-in-law, Jimmy Elms, Sr., sister, Patricia Thomas Beattie, husband Mike, five grandchildren, Grayland Purcell, Lauren Castle, Meredith Haney, Jimmy Elms, Jr., and Chris Elms, two great grandchildren, Brynn Purcell, and Ada Castle. Ken was a faithful, dedicated member of First Baptist Church where he served as a teacher, deacon, singing in the choir, and many other ministries. He met his beautiful wife at church where they later married and enjoyed 30 years of marriage. They loved “Yardening” together, and working in their rose gardens, and growing beautiful purple blooming Crepe Myrtle Trees. All that knew him knew the love he had for gardening.
