Larry Brock, 79, of Matthews, NC passed away on Friday, February 24, 2023. He was born in Lula, GA on August 31, 1943, son to the late Charles Brock and Fannie Mae “Pat” Lawson Horne.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, March 12, 2023, at First Baptist Church of Monroe, 109 West Morrow Ave, Monroe, NC 28112. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2:00 PM until 2:45 PM in the church Parlor.
He grew up in Gainesville, GA, and Monroe, NC. He graduated from Monroe High School (where he met Ginny) in 1961, but they did not start dating until college. Dad took a circuitous route in college and went to Wingate College, Georgia Tech, and graduated from NCSU in 1966. He was a lifelong Wolfpack fan as evidenced by his wardrobe choices.
Larry and Ginny celebrated 56 years of marriage on September 24. They were each other’s anchors and enjoyed traveling to the Florida Keys, England, San Fran, New Mexico, and St Thomas. They also chaperoned the youth handbell cruise to the Bahamas, but that’s a story for another time.
He worked at Lockheed-Martin, Teledyne Alvac, Murray Construction Co, Wingate University and Chris Hope Engineering. Note that he worked for two of his best friends. He was a loyal and steadfast member of First Baptist Church, Monroe, where he served as a Deacon, taught Sunday School, coached church league basketball, and played church league softball. The church was the center of his life.
Larry spent many hours on the tennis courts at Beaver Dam Swim and Racket Club and on the golf course at Rolling Hills Country Club where he shot a hole-in-one on the wrong hole.
Family was number one in his book. “If one falls, we all fall”. He enjoyed family vacations to the beach, insisted on celebrating all birthdays, and had family dinners out with DQ afterwards (the most important part – heath bar blizzards, please).
Larry is survived by his loving wife Virginia “Ginny” Medlin Brock, son Russ Brock, daughter Susie Verrill (Dave), brother-in-laws; Tommy Medlin and Todd Medlin (Nancy); five grandchildren, Chris Verrill; Katie Verrill; Thomas Verrill; Sarah Brock; and Ryan Brock, as well as his favorite child “Princess Abbe”.
In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made to First Baptist Church of Monroe, 109 West Morrow Ave, Monroe, NC 28112, Memory and Movement of Charlotte 411 Billingsley Road, Suite 103, Charlotte, NC 28211, Parkinson’s Association of the Carolina’s 2101 Sardis Road North, Suite 102, Charlotte, NC 28227.
