Larry David Melvin passed away on Wednesday, September 30, 2026. Larry is survived by his wife of 16 years, Linda Allen Melvin, his sister, Martha Morrison; two stepdaughters, Daphnie Rhoads (Kent), Stephanie Cole (David), three grandchildren, Justin Rhoads (Tori), Jacob Rhoads (Elizabeth), Brady Cole, and one great-grandchild on the way; and many loves nieces and nephews.
He was born in Charlotte, NC on December 21, 1955, son to the late Columbus Booth Melvin and Nellie Sullivan Melvin. He is also preceded in death by his four sisters, Paula Leonard, Faye Edwards, Jean Swann, and Becky Jenkins.
Larry was a one-of-a kind man who could build or fix anything. At just 15 years old, he began working as a professional meat cutter at Norman’s Grocery Store to help support his mother. The early responsibility shaped the hardworking, dependable man he would become. Throughout his life, Larry built a diverse and respected career. After Norman’s Grocery Store, he went on to work for Southern Flooring and later became a Superintendent for R.T. Dooley Construction Company. For the last 15 years of his career, Larry devoted himself to one of his greatest passions, becoming a professional gunsmith and operating his own business, Melvin’s Gunsmithing. Larry always enjoyed fishing, playing golf, spending time outdoors, shooting at the range, and competitive shooting events. He also had a special love for animals. But above all else, Larry was a devoted and caring family man. Larry was the person people could count on for anything. Again, Larry could fix anything but the greatest thing he built was a life filled with love, family, friendship, hard work, and memories that will last forever. He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever cherished.
A private service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly request donations be made in Larry’s memory to CERA (Carolina Equine Rescue & Assistance) in recognition of Larry’s love for his own miniature horses.
