Larry Shannon “Shan” Starnes, 58, passed away on Friday, June 7, 2024. He was born on April 4, 1966, to his parents Judith Starnes and the late Larry M. Starnes.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 14, 2024, at 3:00 PM at Gordon Funeral Chapel, 1904 Lancaster Ave. Monroe, NC 28112. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2:00 PM to 2:45 PM at Gordon Funeral Service.
Shan was a friend to many people and loved helping people. He would come help you in a second's notice, no matter how he felt himself. He worked extremely hard his entire life. There was not a lazy bone in his body. He was never still. He had many, many skills and talents.
Shan built his parent's home along with a friend. He built log cabins with a friend and built furniture from logs and tree limbs. Shan was a highly skilled tree climber and was proud to say "he really didn't need insurance because he was never going to throw a tree anywhere that it shouldn't be". He proved that he was right. That man loved a challenge. He had no fear. If ever you needed to 'live off the land" you wanted him by your side.
Shan was an excellent horseman as most people know, but we always felt that he was an animal whisperer as well. I don't think there was a horse he couldn't ride. Being outside in nature was his favorite place to be. He had a passion for freshwater fishing and camping at the lake or river. There is a freezer full of his fish right now waiting to be cooked.
Shan enjoyed life to the fullest. He worked hard, loved harder, and was never boastful about what he did or could do. Shan just did it. He did not require a spotlight on his skills and achievements. The satisfaction was in his heart.
Shan was a Christian, he was saved and loved God his entire life. He carried his bible in his truck. It was on his bed when he left to go to hospice. He knew the bible and would tell you what was in it, much like his grandpa Mac. Shan loved his family dearly. He loved his friends dearly. He loved his life dearly.
May God hold on to Shan, the family members with him, and all who will join him. He is waiting for his loved ones today......... What a glorious day to come.
Shan is survived by his mother, Judy Starnes; son, Tyler Starnes; brother, Joshua Starnes; sister, Angie Calabretta (Art); and nephew Daniel Calabretta.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Levine & Dickson Hospice House, 8919 Park Rd. Suite 1000, Charlotte, NC 28210.
The family would also like to extend their thanks to all of the hospice workers both at the Hospice House and those that gave him in home care during this difficult time.
