Leroy R. Simpson passed from this life to his eternal rest on Monday, October 25, 2021 at the age of 96. He was the son of the late Z.K. Simpson and Arrie Tarlton Simpson. Born on March 19, 1925, he lived his life here in Union County as a man of integrity in all his business and personal conduct, caring for his neighbors with quiet humility and compassion. Mr. Simpson was the founder and president of Simpson’s Eggs, a four-generation agri-business located in New Salem. He contributed substantially to the excellence of the school system and agri-business in Union County. Mr. Simpson was a lifetime member of New Hope Baptist Church and a man of strong faith. As a young man, he answered the call of his country and served in the U. S. Army’s 114th Infantry Regiment. During World War II, he received a Purple Heart as well as several other medals of distinction for his service in Europe. After the war, he returned home to the family farm where he worked for the next 75 years. He modeled patriotism and commitment to our country through his life, leaving a lasting impression on his family and all who knew him. Mr. Simpson was named to the Union County Agriculture Hall of Fame and served numerous civic organizations. Mr. Simpson is survived by his wife of 76 years, Nell Gaddy Simpson of Monroe; a son, Bruce Simpson and daughter-in-law Kathy of Charlotte; daughter-in-law Anita B. Simpson of Monroe; grandchildren, Lindsay Dorr and husband Paul of Columbia, MO, Kelly Simmons and husband Jake of Monroe, Alex Simpson and wife Krissy of Monroe, Emily Simpson, Ryan Simpson and Julia Simpson, all of Charlotte; and great-grandchildren, Derek Simmons, Olivia Simmons and Katelyn Simmons, Caden Simpson, Blakely Simpson and Barrett Simpson,. Mr. Simpson was preceded in death by his son, Richard and siblings, Kate Haigler, Myrtle Chaney Ray Simpson and Earl Simpson. A graveside celebration of Mr. Simpson’s life will be held on Friday, October 29, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at New Hope Baptist Church. Rev. Marty Griffin will officiate. There will be an open visitation from 3:00 - 7:00 pm on Thursday, October 28, 2021 in Gordon Funeral Service, 1904 Lancaster Avenue, Monroe, NC for you to pay your respects.
