Luther Eugene Walter

Luther Eugene (Gene) Walter, age 96, beloved husband to Joyce Sherrill Walter for 73 years, passed away on Wednesday, August 21, 2024. Born on May 31, 1928, he was the son of the late Luther A. and Lola Belle Walter. Gene and his wife have been residents for most of their lives in Wingate and members of First Presbyterian Church in Monroe. Gene held two Masters degrees in Education and in Divinity, and was a former Pastor for 17 years, serving in Highlands, NC, Whiteville, NC and at Wingate Baptist Church. Following the pastorate, Gene served as chaplain, pastor, and then director of mental health for Union, Stanley, and Anson Counties. In his director role, Gene initiated transportation services for the elderly, and provided counseling for a multitude of persons over the years, sharing his guidance, caring, and compassion.

Gene is survived by his wife Joyce, his son Steve Walter and wife Jimmie of Waxhaw, NC; daughter Terry Walter McRee and husband Brad of Hilton Head Island, SC, brothers Bill Walter of Jacksonville, FL and Jack Walter of Fort Mill, SC. He is also survived by his grandson Cayse Logan McRee and wife Jackie of Ocala, FL.

A celebration of life will be held for Gene on Friday, August 30th from 2-4 PM at First Presbyterian Church, 302 E. Windsor St., in Monroe, NC.
