Mackey “Eugene” Hobbs (Smiley) was born on August 20, 1945, in Monroe, NC, son to the late Clarence James Hobbs and Nancy Broome Hobbs Moore. He is also preceded in death by his brothers, Kenneth Hobbs, Clayton Hobbs, Dewey Hobbs, Jeff Hobbs, and his sister Helen Baucom.
A funeral service will be held at 12:00 PM on Saturday, January 25, 2025, at Gordon Funeral Chapel with burial to follow at Lakeland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 11:00 AM until 11:45 AM at Gordon Funeral Service, 1904 Lancaster Ave, Monroe, NC 28112.
Eugene married the love of his life, Debbie, in 1964. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1964 to 1965. Eugene worked in construction most of his life and owned Gene Hobbs Carpentry until his retirement in 2001. He never met a stranger; you couldn’t cross paths with him without him making you smile or laugh. To say he was the sunshine on a rainy day would be an understatement. He could brighten up anyone’s day, no matter the circumstances.
He loved to spend time with his family and enjoyed helping others in their time of need. He was an avid hunter and fisherman; he loved being in the woods or at a pond or the coast. He couldn’t sit still. If his time wasn’t spent with family, hunting or fishing, he was in his shop tinkering on something.
Eugene was saved, by the Grace of God, when he was a teenager and baptized in the pond behind Faulks Baptist Church. It is with his testimony that we know that he is absent from the body and now present with The Lord. This in itself gives peace that only The Lord can give. Though we will miss him greatly, we can rejoice that he is no longer in pain and is running on the streets of gold.
Eugene is survived by his wife of 60 years, Debbie Honeycutt Hobbs; children, Robert “Rodney” Hobbs (Trish), Deborah “Chrissy” Medlin (Dale), Connie Mangun (Dennis), and Scotty Hobbs (Susie); grandchildren, Jeffrey Hobbs (Karrie), Brandi Watkins (Kevin), Daniel Medlin (Dana), Tristan Mangum (Grace), Tyler Hobbs, Justin Hobbs (Ashley), Shelby Hobbs, Ryan Hobbs, and Kayla Shortsleeve; great grandchildren, Madison, Joslyn, Jeremy, Charli, Kaden, Garreth, Brayden, Riley, Jackson, Levi, Saylor, and Avi; brothers, David Hobbs (Diane), Steven Hobbs, and Ronnie Hobbs; and sisters, Joyce Davis (Bobby), and Evelyn Smith (Shelton).
