Mary Ann Hall, age 79, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, December 21, 2016 with her loving husband, Olin, by her side. Mary Ann and Olin met after her minister’s wife suggested she write him while he was overseas in the Army. Once Olin returned to the states, they were married six weeks later. They recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. A native of Hickory, NC, Mary Ann graduated from Hickory High School, attended Lenoir Rhyne College, and earned her undergraduate degree from Wake Forest University. She then earned her Masters in Education from University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She began her teaching career in Illinois and continued to teach for Monroe City Schools. She retired after teaching elementary school and English as a Second Language for over thirty years. Mary Ann was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Monroe and an active member of the Faith Circle there for many years. Her main focus was serving children whether they were in the local community or around the world. Mary Ann is survived by her adoring husband, Olin; daughter, Cindi Bernart and her husband Will of Charlotte, NC; and Harriet Hall and her partner, the late Tammy Branch of Charlotte, NC. Mary Ann was the beloved Nana to Bill Bernart and Kate Bernart. Mary Ann was also Mom to Uc Cao and his wife, Huong Le, of Winterville, NC. In addition, Mary Ann is survived by sisters-in-laws Lois Hall, LuRay Wilkinson and Elva Brannock and brothers-in-law David Poage, Stacy Wilkinson and Louis Brannock. After living many wonderful years in Dixon and Dundee, Illinois, Mary Ann and Olin moved back to North Carolina in 1977. She loved being back home with the mountains and beach nearby. But more than the scenery, she loved her family, friends, numerous children who each called her Mom, and her church family. She was loved by everyone she met on her journey through life and she will be welcomed by many in her new heavenly home. We will miss her and love her close in our hearts forever. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held on Wednesday, December 28, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Monroe. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall following the service. The family deeply thanks her devoted caregivers Lisa Crook, Jackie Wall, Wanda McGee and Joanne McDanel as well as Hospice of Union County for their care. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 302 E. Windsor St., Monroe, NC 28112. Gordon Funeral Home is caring for the family of Mrs. Hall.
