Max Melton

July 30, 1933 — September 14, 2017

Olin Max Melton, 84, passed away Thursday, September 14, 2017. He was born July 30, 1933, son of the late Olin Wayne and Reecie Griffin Melton. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Bill Melton. Funeral services will be Monday, September 18, 2017 at 2:00 PM in First Baptist Church, 109 W. Morrow Street, Monroe, NC 28112. Burial will follow in Sandy Ridge Baptist Church cemetery. The family will visit with friends and relatives Sunday, September 17, 2017 from 4:00 – 6:00 PM in Monroe First Baptist Church Family Life Center. Mr. Melton is survived by his loving wife, Martha Hunter Melton; sons, Max Melton, Jr. and wife Karen of Lancaster, SC and Tim Melton and wife Monica of Monroe; daughters, Melissa Auret and husband Dave of Monroe and Denise Carl and husband Neal of Richmond, VA; sisters, Betty McWhorter and Carol Tyson of Monroe and Patsy Jones of Sunset Beach, NC; grandchildren, Matthew Melton, Casey Melton, Madison Carl, Zachary Carl, Emma Carl, Emily Melton Phillips and husband Derek, Haley Melton, Janie Auret McDonald and husband Patrick, William Auret and wife Haley Brigman Auret, Wesley Auret, Benjamin Auret and great-granddaughter, Stella Blue McDonald. Mr. Melton served his state and community in a variety of ways including the N C House of Representatives, Board of County Commissioners, Board of Education and on the Board of Directors of Habitat for Humanity, Health Quest, Hospice, South Piedmont Community College, United Way and the Central N C Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Mr. Melton also served his church as a Deacon and Sunday School Teacher for over 50 years and was a member of the First Baptist Church Board of Trustees. He was also a Gideon and served in the Prison Ministry. In 2005 the state of North Carolina presented Mr. Melton it’s highest Civilian Award – The Order of the Long Leaf Pine and in 1999 he was selected as Union County Man of the Year. His life was his family and the values he instilled in his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren are his legacy. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Union County, 700 W. Roosevelt Blvd., Monroe, NC 28110 or First Baptist Church, 109 W. Morrow St., Monroe, NC 28112.
