Melvin Clay Mcwhorter

Melvin Clay McWhorter, 83, of Monroe North Carolina passed away in his home surrounded by his family on Monday, December 14, 2020 after a long illness. Born in Union County, he was the son of the late Samuel Edward and Grace Couick McWhorter. Melvin was retired from his career at Scott Aviation and was a long-time member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Lancaster, SC. A master gardener, Melvin loved nothing more than being outside growing vegetables for his family and friends. Because of his love of the land, Melvin was known to travel with his tiller to create a garden for others who were unable to create one for themselves. His love and respect for life is unparalleled. He was a kind man who loved God, his wife and family, and his dog Diesel. He was always up for a new adventure; loved to laugh and enjoyed a good plate of fish. Melvin is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Nell Hayes McWhorter; daughters, Sherrie McWhorter (Diane Stevio), Lori Thomas (Randy) and Leslie Schlappich (Patrick); his sister, Cathy Griffin (Steve) and his sister-in-law, Delores Hinson. He was blessed with three grandchildren who were the light of his life, Brittany Lowery (Dustin), Greyson Cook and Logan Schlappich. In addition to his parents, his brother’s family - Carlton, Betty, and their daughter, Leah - preceded Melvin in death. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to all of the neighbors and friends who lifted up Melvin in their prayers and kindnesses during his battle with cancer. Due to the current Covid-19 concerns, a private service was held for the family at Gordon's Funeral Home with intombment at Lakeland Cemetery.
