Michael Kim Byrd, 78, passed away peacefully on April 30, 2025, surrounded by his wife, daughters, and their families. Born on August 12, 1946, in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, he was the son of the late John Howard and Edna Fox Byrd. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Gordon Hugh Byrd.
Known to many as “Mike,” he graduated from Oak Ridge High School and went on to attend the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. A proud veteran, Mike served honorably in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War, demonstrating the same patriotism, dedication and strength that would define his life.
Mike retired from Doctors Inc., where he worked for many years. In retirement, he enjoyed spending his days on the golf course and cheering on his cherished Tennessee Volunteers. His quick wit, generous spirit, and deep love for his family will be remembered by all who knew him.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Elizabeth Platter Byrd; his children, Patricia Medlin (Kevin), Mickey Byrd (Karen), and Christina Helms (Daron); and his grandchildren, Elizabeth Carson Medlin, Austin Helms, and Michael Byrd, who were the pride and joy of his life.
All services will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the St. Judes Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Judes Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
Go Big Orange! (Just because Mike would love it.)
