Nellie Tarleton Drye

August 29, 1935 — May 19, 2025

Nellie Jean Tarleton Drye, 89, of Marshville, NC passed away on Monday, May 19, 2025. She was born in Union County, NC on August 29, 1935, daughter to the late John Belk Tarleton & Vera Lee Baucom Tarleton, she is also preceded in death by her husband Gene Benton Drye, a sister, Rachel Mullis, and daughter-in-law Norma Drye.

Nellie loved hanging out with her family, especially watching her boys play sports. She was a great cook and enjoyed making meals for everyone. Every Wednesday, it was a tradition for the whole family to gather at her place for dinner. She enjoyed her beach trips with her sister, Johnnie and traveling to various places with her son Bobby and daughter-in-law Norma. Listening to music was a favorite pastime of Nellie’s along with her sister-in-law Kate Mangum and her niece Saundra Little going to Hargett’s Store and Hatley’s in Stanfield. Nellie loved reading her bible daily and enjoyed getting a new selection of books that were picked up at the local library. Watching the birds outside her window was another enjoyment she had. If she wasn’t sure of what kind it was, she would refer to her bird book she kept close by. Nellie and her husband Gene started a wholesale egg delivery business, running it until their son Bobby took over. For the next 20 years, they operated an antique business, purchasing and selling items they discovered during that period.
