Norman Steve Hill 85, of Monroe, NC passed away on Thursday, February 20, 2025, at Atrium Health, in Charlotte, NC, with his family by his side. Steve was born in Princeton, WV on February 15, 1940, as the only child of Claude William Hill and Alma Meadows Hill.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, at Central United Methodist Church, 801 S. Hayne Street, Monroe, NC 28112 with burial to follow in Lakeland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10:00 AM until 10:45 AM in Central
Steve was a 1958 graduate of Princeton High School and retired as Operations Supervisor for American Electric Power in Glyn Lyn, VA after 36 years of service. He also served in the United States Army National Guard.
He was married to the love of his life, Martha Elmore Hill for 53 years until her death in 2013. While living in Princeton, Steve was an active member of Stinson Methodist Church serving on the board of Trustees, Sunday School Superintendent and member of the church choir. Steve also loved the farm he grew up on and continued part-time farming until he and Martha moved to Monroe in 1999 to be close to their daughter Deborah Hill Gambino, son-in-law Jeff and grandsons Robert and Steven Gambino of Charlotte. After moving to Monroe, Steve and Martha became active in Central United Methodist Church serving on the Administrative Board and various other committees. He was also very active in the Monroe Civitan’s where he was honored with the Monroe Civitan of the Year for all of his volunteer work in building wheelchair ramps for people in need in Union County. Steve loved spending time with his grandsons and never missed any of their soccer, baseball or lacrosse games while they were growing up. He also loved golfing and spending time at the beach with his family. He will be dearly missed.
Left to cherish his memory of their beloved father and grandfather is Deborah Gambino, husband Jeff and grandsons Rob and Steven Gambino of Charlotte and brother-in-law, Jerry Elmore of Smithsburg, MD. Besides his parents and wife, he was also preceded in death by infant granddaughter Michelle Katherine Gambino and sister-in-law Hazel Barton.
