Joel Otis Horton, Jr., 91 passed away Sunday, January 31, 2016. He was born in Union County, NC on July 6, 1924 son of the late Joel Otis and Florence Clark Horton. Mr. Horton was a long time member of Hebron United Methodist Church, a Mason and Shriner, a veteran of the US Navy during WW II and later served an enlistment in the US Army. Otis owned and operated Horton Gordon ESSO service station on Hwy. 74 for 20 years and later worked for Don’s Auto Parts for 20 years. The family will receive friends Thursday, February 4, 2016 from 12:30 until 1:45 PM at Gordon Funeral Service, 1904 Lancaster Ave., Monroe, NC 28112. The funeral will be 2:00 PM in the Gordon Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in Lakeland Memorial Park. Mr. Horton was preceded in death by his wife, Sadie Gordon Horton. He is survived by a daughter, Barbara Alexander and husband James of Monroe, a granddaughter, Donna Hargette, and husband Thad, and great granddaughter, Tori Lee Hargette. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 950 W. Faris Rd., Greenville, SC 29605 or Hospice of Union County, 700 W. Roosevelt Blvd., Monroe, NC 28110.
