Paul James Matheson, 93, of Monroe, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 23, 2025.

Born on December 16, 1931, in Monroe, NC, Paul was the son of the late David Augustus Matheson and Zela Smith Matheson Elliott. He is also preceded in death by his three sisters—Elizabeth, Beatrice, and Nancy—as well as many other beloved family members.

Paul proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps before dedicating 42 years of his life to education as a teacher and principal with Union County Public Schools. His influence reached far beyond the classroom—throughout his life, former students would reach out to share how much they appreciated him and how deeply he had impacted their lives. His passion for teaching, his fairness, and his indelible personality left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

Outside of work, Paul was a devoted fan of the Washington Redskins (now Commanders), the New York Yankees, and the timeless music of Frank Sinatra. He had an easy charm and genuine warmth that drew people to him, continuing to make an impression on others even into his later years.

Paul is survived by his loving wife, Teresa Matheson; his daughter, Katie Coffey, and her husband, Nick; and his two adored grandchildren, TJ and Elizabeth Coffey, who brought him endless pride and joy. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Marion Sharkany; his sister-in-law, Nancy Ellis; and his brother-in-law, Gregg Sharkany.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the nurses, CNAs, doctors, and housekeeping staff who cared for Paul with such compassion and respect.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date to honor and remember the remarkable life of Paul Matheson.
