Payne Fletcher Howard

Payne Fletcher Howard, 86, died at home Saturday, July 20, 2013. He was born December 13, 1926 in Monroe, NC. Payne was the son of the late Samuel and Tommie Pressley Howard. He was preceded in death by his brother, Donald Howard and his sister, Peggy Crowley. Mr. Howard was an Army veteran, serving in both WW II and the Korean War. He owned and operated the Main Street Atlantic service station for many years and later worked in construction until his retirement. He was a member of West Monroe Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife and best friend of 62 years, Margie Laney Howard; his daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Donnie Hyrne of Columbia, SC; his grandson, Donald DJ Hyrne, Jr. and Lindsey Parrish; and his pride and joy his great-grandson, Preston Vaughn Hyrne all of Monroe, NC. He is also survived by 2 nieces, Vickie Penegar of Monroe, NC and Debbie Joyner of Waxhaw, NC; a brother-in-law, Ken Laney of Monroe, NC; and sister-in-law, Helen Ennis of Chesapeake, Virginia. Payne was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, and yard work. He was greatly loved by his family and friends and will be missed by all. He loved people and never met a stranger. He was a giving person and true friend to all who knew him. The family will receive friends at West Monroe Baptist Church 1 hour prior to the funeral service. The service will be held on Tuesday, July 23, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. conducted by Dr. David Hayes. Burial will be at Lakeland Memorial Park immediately following the service.
